Knox Regional Netball Centre Extension

Knox Regional Netball Centre Extension

The $15.45 million redevelopment of the Knox Regional Netball Centre represents a significant upgrade to local sporting infrastructure. The project scope featured the addition of two indoor courts, new change rooms, a dedicated function room, and comprehensive upgrades to the existing stadium, supported by 180 additional parking bays.

Challenges

A primary objective for the extension was achieving a 4 Green Star certification while maintaining optimal thermal comfort within the high-volume stadium and gym spaces. A key technical constraint was the requirement to use electricity as the primary fuel source, necessitating a highly efficient approach to HVAC design and building envelope performance to manage operational costs and carbon impact.

Technical Solutions

Co-Perform provided specialised ESD consultancy to integrate a suite of sustainability initiatives into the facility’s design. Our involvement ensured that the ambitious environmental targets were met with technical rigour.

Key project elements included:

  • Advanced HVAC Modelling: We undertook detailed building simulation and accurate modelling of all mechanical systems. This ensured that predicted energy consumption was closely aligned with thermal comfort requirements, verifying that the high-volume spaces would remain functional and efficient under various load conditions.
  • Renewable Energy Integration: The design incorporated solar power generation and was evaluated for energy storage potential to offset the all-electric building load.
  • Resource Efficiency: The project utilised recycled materials, high-efficiency indoor and outdoor lighting systems, and comprehensive rainwater retention systems for on-site water re-use.
  • Natural Light Optimisation: Strategies were implemented to maximise natural light within the courts, reducing reliance on artificial lighting during daylight hours.

By providing high-confidence energy predictions and integrated ESD strategies, Co-Perform enabled the delivery of a 4 Green Star certified facility that balances high-performance sporting requirements with sustainable long-term operation.
